Emma Willemse

Born in 1959 in Riebeek Kasteek, South Africa. She lives and works in Riebeek Kasteel.


Emma is a conceptual artist. She holds a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from the University of South Africa (cum laude) and a degree in Psychology and Library Science.
Her artistic practice is varied. She creates sculptural installations, works with engraving, video, drawing and painting, and explores photographic processes.
Her works deal with themes of place and trauma, displacement and migration, urban development and interconnected constructions, memory and identity.
Her works have entered, among others, the Eindhoven Collection (Netherlands), and are also part of the acquisitions of the South African Embassy in Beijing (China) and the Art Bank in Johannesburg (South Africa)
She has also initiated and managed community art projects and participated in the launch of art festivals.
